This month we’re kicking off our Meet the Team series, starting with our Sales and Marketing Director Richard. With a long history in the industry, Richard is our go-to man for all things flooring.
How did you get started in the flooring industry?
I joined Gerflor back in 2004 after working for a PVC company. So, I understood the product but was new to the flooring industry. I started out as a residential business development manager but ended up managing the commercial and specification teams within the UK. I was used to working with the marketing teams in France to bring new products into the UK market, so when the opportunity came to join Amtico as a product manager, it was easy to move over. I lead several major product launches as well as managing the commercial spec team. And then the opportunity at Distinctive came along and the rest, as they say, is history. The chance to come in and help shape the way a business is operating was something I could not ignore. We are building a fantastic team which will help take us from strength to strength.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My days can really vary with so many plates to keep spinning, but I make time every day to check in with my teams to make sure that our projects are running smoothly and that they have everything they need from me. After that, days are usually filled with various meetings either with customers or with other departments to get the latest goings on with the rest of Distinctive Flooring.
What do you enjoy the most about working at Distinctive Flooring?
I love to cultivate the relationships with our retailers with the help of our territory managers and really get to know them, the ins and outs of their business and how Distinctive Flooring can help them drive their business forward. It’s these relationships that help our retailers build trust in the brand
What features would you say make a strong team?
Product knowledge is key – it’s essential that you know what you are talking about. It gives confidence, without being cocky, and should mean that your customers know that they can come to you with any questions they may have. Being friendly, practical and supportive are key values that as a business we strive towards. It’s also really important to know your customer base and the sector. If you understand how the market is operating, you can advise the best course of action for your customer. Nobody likes putting a round peg in a square hole. Great communication is also really important. And finally, enjoy what you are doing. If you have common goals, there is a strength in unity.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
You will often find me on the golf course on a Saturday morning. It’s a great way to relax and yet retain an air of competitiveness with my friends!
You’ll also find me walking Mable, our cockerpoo puppy. She’s coming up to a year old and is a great addition to the family. She gets on brilliantly with my two granddaughters. I’m a massive family man and love spending time with my (three) children and grandchildren when I can.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Success comes with hard work. It’s never given to you on a plate. Stay focused on what you want to achieve and work hard for it. The results will come.
What’s your favourite #DesertIslandDistinctive?
I’d take our new ridged click product with me. It’s tough and durable, and I can make it into a shelter!
